What the test covers

The test has 50 multiple choice questions that run from A1 to C2 in order: 18 on grammar, 16 on vocabulary, 8 on reading and 8 on listening. Each listening clip can be played 2 times. Questions go forward only, so answer each one before moving on.

How your level is worked out

A level counts as passed with at least 60% of its questions right, for example 6 of 10 at B1. Your level is the highest one you pass without skipping a level below it, and the result shows a breakdown by level and skill.

Frequently asked questions

What do I pay for?

Taking the test needs no payment and no sign-up. When you finish, one payment unlocks your level, the breakdown by level and skill, and a PDF certificate with a verification code.

How long does it take?

You have 50 minutes for 50 questions. The timer starts when you press Start, and most people finish a little earlier.

Does it test speaking and writing?

No. It covers grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening, which can be marked objectively. Speaking and writing need a human examiner.

Is the result an official certificate?

No. It is an independent estimate of your CEFR level. For an official diploma you need an exam such as the DELE or SIELE.

International Spanish Test is an independent online assessment aligned to the CEFR. It is not an official exam and is not affiliated with the Instituto Cervantes, DELE, SIELE or ACTFL. If a school, employer or authority asks for a Spanish certificate, check which ones they accept.
